The best way to get a taste of Kauai is, well, to actually taste it; the sweet pineapple, the fleshy rich coconuts and a variety of tropical fruits, maybe even a few you’ve never heard of: tangelo, pomelo, cumquat, breadfruit and apple bananas. Then there’s the almost spiritual chocolate, cacao and honey. There might be a few unexpected flavors, too: handcrafted teas, spices, and tinctures made from Kauai grown herbs or locally grown taro from a sixth-generation local farm.

That’s why we’ve curated our own signature North Shore Culinary Tour. Featuring friends of the Timbers who have literally planted the seeds for some of Kauai’s bespoke locally grown products, 13 guests will have access to backdoor farm tours and private tastings (seats fill up fast, so reserve yours in advance). Rooted in on our commitment to the Hokuala Farm and sustainable living on island, we’re proud to introduce our guests to homegrown Kauai through these locally owned and operated boutique businesses.

Starting in our own backyard, Farmer Lee Cody hosts a coconut tasting to set the tone for the day and also give guests a fresh perspective on our own organic producer. Then it’s onto Lydgate Farms, a fifth-generation farm located above the town of Kapa’a, between Sleeping Giant and Mt. Wai’ale’ale, known for its award-winning crops of cacao, vanilla and honey. A chocolate tasting is only part of this interactive and comprehensive farm experience, one of the most popular farm tours on the island.

From there, we circle the island to the north to explore Kauai’s renowned “citrus corridor,” with a visit to Hale Kahiki for an orchard tour and tasting. This small three-acre pineapple plantation is owned and operated by our friend Shannon Nering, a yogini and nutritionist who hosts Kauai Pineapple Retreats, a variety of wellness programs designed to inspire optimum health and longevity.

After a morning of fruit and chocolate it’s time for lunch Hanalei Taro & Juice Company, where farm-to-table has been a way of life for six generations on the family owned and operated W.T. Haraguchi Farm. Experience authentic Hawaiian dishes like laulau, kalua pig, poi, lomi salmon, and kulolo and everything and anything made with taro, including Taro Mochi Cake, Taro Hummus, Hanalei Taro Veggie Burgers, Kulolo, & Taro Smoothies.

The tour concludes with a tea sampling at Kauai Farmacy in Kilauea where herbs are harvested from the 60-plus medicinal herbal plants on the bio-diverse herbal farm founded by Genna and Doug Wolkon for health and for pleasure. For whatever ails you, Kauai Farmacy also produces proprietary herbal extracts and remedies. The tea is handpicked and carefully harvested to create the freshest product possible. A cup to calm the mind and to help digest all the flavors of Kauai.
