Celebrating Makahiki, The Hawaiian New Year
December 05, 2024
What is Makahiki?
Makahiki symbolizes the beginning of the Hawaiian new year, a period of peace and celebration that honors the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. Historically, this season was a time to pause from work and conflict, honor the land’s bounty, and foster unity through games, ceremonies, and feasts. The season begins with the rising of the Makali‘i (Pleiades) constellation at sunset. During Makahiki, chiefs would collect ho‘okupu (offerings) from their people and communities would come together for festivities.
Celebrating Makahiki on Kaua‘i
On Kaua‘i, the spirit of Makahiki is alive in community gatherings, traditional games, and opportunities to reconnect with the land and each other. From Hanalei to Waimea, residents and visitors can witness the beauty of this cultural season. Many events are family-friendly, encouraging everyone to join in.
Community events often feature time-honored games like ‘ulu maika (a lawn game similar to bowling), ‘o’o ihe (spear throwing), and kōnane (a strategy board game). Participating in these activities provides a hands-on way to connect with the rich history of the islands. Farmers’ markets and hula performances are also integral to the season, while traditional foods like taro, ʻuala (sweet potatoes), and kālua pig take center stage.
Makahiki at Timbers Kaua‘i
Timbers Kaua‘i brings the spirit of Makahiki to Owners and guests through a blend of cultural education and traditional activities. Owner Sunset Sessions feature visits from cultural expert Kumu Kehaulani Kekua, a valuable opportunity to dive deeper into the stories, significance, and practices of Makahiki, enriching your connection to Kaua‘i and its history.
Throughout the week, we offer a rotating selection of traditional activities. Guests of all ages can enjoy learning and participating in ‘ulu maika, testing their precision in ‘o’o ihe, or challenging their strategic thinking with kōnane.
The Spirit of Makahiki
Kaua‘i’s pristine natural beauty provides a tranquil backdrop for reveling in the spirit of gratitude that defines Makahiki season. The island’s emerald mountains, shimmering waterfalls, and golden beaches create a serene environment perfect for reflection. Imagine starting your day with a sunrise walk through Hōkūala, the morning light casting a golden glow over rich greenery, and ending with an evening with loved ones connecting over games and stories.
Makahiki is a time to slow down, appreciate the blessings of life, and build stronger connections – with the land, with others, and with yourself. Participating in Kaua‘i’s Makahiki traditions is a unique way to experience the island’s culture and community.
