Ocean, lava, sand and sun: All local elements Timbers Kauai filters through an elegant design aesthetic to bring the island indoors. Every element of the resort on Hokuala—from building names to tile floors— is thoughtfully crafted to create a sense of place, and most importantly, a sense of home: two vital tenets infused into every Timbers Resorts property.

That design philosophy, guided largely by Wilson Associates in collaboration with the Timbers Resorts development and design team, manifests the moment of arrival: The property entrance nods to our stunning resort location Hokuala (“rising star”) with a star-paneled design element that’s become a favorite Kauai Kodak moment. Setting the tone for the Pacific’s starring role throughout the property,  the reception opens to a spacious lanai with views over the ocean to Ninini Point lighthouse. From there, the views never cease.

At the Kaiholo oceanfront residences, for example, perched over the Pacific, the interplay of sand and sea dictates the decor — apropos, since Kaiholo roughly translates to “the ocean current” and may be interpreted as water moving on sand. Reflecting shades of blue and the granular movement of sand,  natural-stone tiles and neutral surface materials filter through cool-hued accents. And, of course, views take center-stage, with gathering spaces that open to spacious lanais, blurring the lines between AC and sea breezes.

“The indoor-outdoor living experience is enhanced by the expansive openings in the living rooms, dining rooms and master suites, which include covered lanais,” said Amanda Kurz, Director of Interior Design for Timbers Resorts.

Bathrooms feature ivory travertine tile with glass accents, quartzite vanity tops, soaking tubs and walk-in showers. Rich wood tones and a neutral palette play against the calming shades of blue to create a revitalized Hawaiian feel.

“The color palette is a new perspective on rich Hawaiian interiors,” Kurz said. “Warm, Sapele-wood flooring and cabinetry is accented with touches of blues and the warmth of ivory travertine, providing Owners a more modernized Hawaiian residence interior.”

At the nearby Maliula condominium homes, a classic neutral color palette creates a relaxing and elegant environment. Architectural elements and furnishings crafted in rich, natural textures nod to the surrounding seascape — a more subtle embrace of the outdoors-in ethos.

Maliula  translates to “look upon with favor and joyful sharing of life energy,”  an energy harnessed by the contemporary, almost cocoon-like aesthetic of the residence interiors: Greyed woods and white-oak flooring and millwork interplay with iridescent and shell-inspired accents to create a neutral, spa-like feel—particularly appropriate since The Spa at Timbers Kauai is housed within Maliula.

“A fresh, contemporary spa-like interior palette allows the majestic Kauai landscape to stand out through the expansive lanais,” said Kurz.
